I think a good book for next years ninth grade reading would be number the stars. The reason to this is because it talks about the real world and has its ups and downs in life. Also this book talks about a boy who is dealing with things in his life as a teenager. and discovers things thats hes never seen before.

  2. chris:

a good book for 9 graders next year would be speak. i pick this book because there are a lot of conflicts and problems that kids can really relate to. i also pick this book because the author wrote the book in a way so that we can understand and relate
to.another reason that i would reccomend this book would be that in this book the way thst the kids treat eachother is
almost exactly the way that some kids get treated and its not a good feeling. so the kids that do have this problem can relate to this book and maybe they can get some tips on how they can protect themselves. or to help them selves make new friends instead of
    making more and more enemys.

  3. Cj:

A book that I would recommend for all the 9th graders next year is a book the has a little bit of mystery. The reason why is the books we read this year were boring and just not very fun. If you have a book the can leave you on your toes until you read it again than that’s something good. The one book I have in mind would be like a Steven King book, there always filled with mystery and suspense. I bet the kids will highly appreciate the first class students for re-recommend books for them so they wont be as bored.

  4. J.P.:

The one book I recommend for the incoming ninth graders is A Child Called ‘It’. I recommend this book because it explains a lot about how some kids live. And not everyone has a lucky lifestyle, to have a loving family and to have people in your life who care about you. This book is by Dave Pelzer, it is about how Dave is referred to as ‘It’ and how his mother beats him and makes him starve. Most kids aren’t used to reading or hearing about this because kids now have better lifestyles. Another reason why the new ninth graders should read this book is cause it is a challenging book.

The book I recromend for 9th grade next year is a searies of books called Death Note. The books of Death Note are
interesting , verry capturing of the eye and it will make you want to reed more and more. The books called Death Note
is a series of about 11 books and they just get better as you go through them. The books take place in Japan and it is
about a straight a student that finds a note book that belonged to a shinigami or god of death. The shinigami drops the note book
making it belong to the human world. The boy that picks it up is named Light. He is a high school graduate going into
collecge. He plans to use the book to make the world a better place but when the police relive that someone is killing
all the crimanals the police are hot on his trail and he does just about anny thing to get them off him.

  6. Erin:

One book that I would recommend for the ninth graders next year would be Speak. I choose this book for all ninth graders to read because Speak is a book about fitting in, but staying true to yourself. It is about not letting anybody get in your way to achieve great things that every student is capable of doing. One other reason I choose Speak is because this book takes place in the freshmen year of high school, and every student should know that everybody feels the same way of wanting to fit in in the beginning of the year and even though it may seem that nobody else may feel alone like they do, all they need is to find a good friend that will stick with them to the end. I chose the book Speak because even from the first page of the book, it is a good read. The author sucks the reader right into the book and right then and there the reader can feel the main character’s feelings.

I think that Looking For Alaska by John Green is a good book for ninth graders that are coming in. The book somewhat teaches you the different types of conflict and how to resolve them in a mature way .The book is separated into two chapters “Before “ and “After”. The book is separated into two sections because a big conflict happens between the characters and it counts down the days before the conflict happen and after the conflict, and it was solved.
The ninth graders that are coming in could relate to the book because it’s in a school setting, but the only twist is that it’s at a boarding school. They could probably learn from the books expirence of the setting of the boarding school. A lot of pranks are pulled during the coarse of the book especially one they pulled on the disciplinary. The book makes you think like you never thought before and it has you puzzled in a state of mind like “Why did she do this? Why didn’t he do that? and I can’t believe what I am reading right now”

I think that one of the book for next years ninth grade should be Five people you meet in heaven.
I thought that was a good book and i would like to see the ninth graders say what they think about the story.
    its a great book.

  9. Tyler B.:

The book that I would like to recommend would be To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This story has to do with the touchy subject of racism. This would be a good book for students because it shows how people can misjudge other people because of the way they look or act. The main characters are a boy and a girl named Jem and Scout, who are two innocent children that don’t understand certain things about life. The students at our school would really appreciate reading a great book like this one over their summer vacation. I hope that you take my recommendation into consideration.

  10. Samantha:

A book that I recommend for the next class of St. Georges, is MURDER, SHE MEOWED. I recommend this book, because I used for one of my book projects and I enjoyed it. This is a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Once you start reading, you can’t wait to see what happens next. I found the book was in the young adult section of the library, so I presume that it is appropriate for 9th graders. Also I think that mystery books are the most interesting to read, and I think that many new 9th graders will also have different tastes in the books they read, so MURDER, SHE MEOWED will be a great book to add for the other students that will be joining us next year.

  11. Steve:

The book I would recommend for the ninth grade reading list is The Godfather. The foremost reason I would recommend this book is because it is interesting. Interest will keep them from getting bored, and making them want to read. More often than not the books on the reading lists are boring and no one in their right mind would want to read them if they had the chance. While not all the books in the reading list are like this, many are.
Another reason is length. This is not the most important reason by far, but many books students are forced to read are short, sometimes less than two hundred pages, thus there is no room to develop a real story with proper details and plot points. The Godfather is a book that has enough length to show every detail that needs to be known.
The final reason for recommending The Godfather would be the author, Mario Puzo. Mario Puzo wrote many books, and many are of the same genre of The Godfather meaning that if whoever read the book liked it, there are many more to satisfy them, unlike some books by certain authors with no tie-ins and no connection.
These are the reasons I would recommend The Godfather for the ninth grade reading list. The only drawback of this book on some students is there is some graphic violence and sex sequences, but otherwise the book is very well written and definitely should be read.

  12. Derrick P.:

A good book that u would recommend for the 9th graders next year would be a book like Maniac Magee, this book is a
good book. It will have you second guessing if you want to take a break or keep reading. The book starts off boring
then it gets more intense throughout the book. If you like baseball then this is a good book for you. Another book i
would recommend would be The Freedom Writers Diary. This is a diary of all the students in a classroom who write about
their feelings and what is going on in their life. And all of it is true and is hard to get through but they did.

  13. Matt H.:

I think that a good book for the reading list next year would be “The Fellowship of the Ring” by J.R.R. Tolkien. This
book is a good story that may challenge readers, but won’t be too difficult. The story also has good morals, such as
companionship and loyalty to cause(persistence). This is great for students in this day and age. Another good bood may
be something by Dean Koontz, who’s horror and suspense novels are phenomenal from beginning to end.

  14. Kody:

I believe a good book for the ninth grade year following this one would be “The Fourth K” by Mario Puzo. It has great story that is filled with confusion, love, chaos, national security issues, and even assassination and terrorism. It would probably catch the interest of most teenagers in the ninth grade. Basically, the President of the United States, in the book of course, becomes obsessed with the fact that he might one day be assassinated since he knows there is a big plan against him and four of his family members who were also high political figures in the world before him suffered the same fate. This man that is the president is none other than another addition to the Kennedy dynasty known as Francis Xavier Kennedy. Many other stories are mixed in with F.X. Kennedy’s, such as a boy’s story from a small town in Utah to Hollywood, who’s name is David. Though some of it seems mixed up and irrelevant everything comes together in the very last chapter of the story. It holds you to suspense and keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout the book. I recommend this book in full confidence that a ninth grader would enjoy reading it.

  15. trierra:

a book i recommend for this year is called “tyrell”.it is about a teenage young man living with his unstable mother and jailbird father. He learns to take of his brother , have a social life and try to finish school all in one piece. But one night after d.jaying a party turned into a night of fighting and pain .i recommend this book because it gives an insite as to how teenagers have to deal with life without anyone knowing whats going on behind closed doors.

  16. Tremayne:

The book i would recommend for the 9th graders next year is hoops, i think that they will really enjoy this book and some will be able to relate to it also. this book starts great and ends great and if i liked it this year then they will to because im sure that we think alike.also this book talks about basketball and how he loves to play im not a good basketball player but this book makes me want to go play.this is a boys life living in the “GHETTO” and he talks about how playin basketball makes him feel better.i also think tghat this will help the 9th graders understand a lot more in life and in school.

  17. gina:

I have two books that I would recommend for the 9th grade book list. The two books are Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry and Let the Circle Be Unbroken. These two books tell detailed stories about hard times that an African American family had and how they overcame some of their problems. The book takes place years ago so you can see how things were different back then. Another thing that I like about these books is that you can read one right after another because they go together. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is the first book and Let the Circle Be Unbroken is the sequel. This way you can actually read two different books without getting completely lost from plot change. Those are the books that I recommend.

  18. Danielle R.:

I think a good book for the ninth grade reading list would be…”Gangs Of New York.” This book is about old time gangsters from the 1840’s to 1863. It’s about each gang trying to take over and be in charge of the 5 Points area in lower Manhattan. There were good people and bad people that were trying to take over. But in the end its overall a happy ending even though a lot of people had to die. This is a change from the types of books that are normally on the list. The book is only 256 pages so it won’t take that long to read. A movie was based off of the book and the movie got 4 stars. A lot of the guys would like this book because its action, drama, bloody but the girls would like it as well if they are interested in that type of reading. I recommend this book because it shows how people way back to the 1800’s lived and that they were fighting just to survive.

  19. chris.b:

I think that a good book for 9th graders would be the book theif. thought it was a good book it was very exciting but i had one problem though when the book was due i had only read about 200 pages and the book had like 350 so i was really mad but other then that it was a goo book.

  20. Tyree:

A ninth grade book that I would recommend for next year is “The Outsiders.” The reason why this would be a good choice is because it can draw readers in with it’s foreshadowing, and suspense. There may be violence and some strong languages, but this is something that students in high school should get into. The reason why is because everyone is growing up, and should understand these real life situations. The book is also very descriptive during major events, so the readers can picture it actually happening. In the book “The Outsiders” it talks about a group of kids, who are known as a gang, living in a place that contains fighting, drama, sorrow, and love.

  21. Brittany:

Overall this year I’ve read some good books, that I would definitely read again or recommend. The name of one of these is called ‘Looking For Alaska’ by John Green. I had a choice of picking a book from a reading list for this project and picked this one. I hadn’t read a really good book in a long time, but when it came to reading this one I couldn’t put it down. This book can teach you a lot of lessons. Some of these lessons are how you can’t take life for granted, how you should enjoy life and the people in it and how quickly life can end. Your probably wondering what I mean but you’ll just have to read it to find out! Another book that I would recommend is called Speak. At first glance of the cover this book to me looked mysterious, boring and interesting. But never had I been so wrong. I read this book in class and again couldn’t put it down. Though I admit at first there were parts where the story was slow or boring, but it was funny, sad and relatable. This book is also good for 9th graders just getting use to high school.

  22. Derek:

A book that I would reccomend next year is Flags Of Our Fathers. It is a very moving book that goes into detail about the soliders that faught and raised the flag on Iwo Jima. The author is one of the flag raisers sons who recalls the day from his fathers and his fathers friends own experiences. He tells you about their publicity and life after that day on top of Mount Sirabachi. This book will attract readers and will keep them on the edge of their seat just to find out what happens to those brave soliders. For those who love war novels, this is the book to buy. It even goes deeper then the movie itself.

  23. Lamont G.:

A book I would recommend for ninth graders is SLAM by Walter Dean Myers. This book talks about a teenager that is growing up in a very urban area. He plays basketball and is trying to make a good life for his self. He goes through a lot of things that most teenagers go through such as relationships, drugs, and violence. I read the book last year and really enjoyed it. I could relate to many things that happened. I believe all Walter Dean Myers books would be good for teenagers to read. I’m sure you would be making the right decision if you made this one of the books you can read.

  24. Sam.D:

The book i would recommend to the nineth graders next year would be the Da Vinci Code, this book is the book i read, i had a week to read it before the next book project it had over 400 pages and i thougt because of how big the pages and font was i wouldn’t even get half way. I read the book every morning for 2 hours and every night that week for 2 hours so for 4 hours a day i read. The reason why i would reccomend this book is because it kept my attention, the book was very good, and i liked reading i couldn’t stop. As a 9th grade student i hated to read it was horrible i still am not a very fluent reader but i must say that this book was very good, and i reccomend for any student coming into the 9th grade, don’t intimidated by the size of the book.

  25. Anthony:

I think a book for next years ninth graders should be Animal Farm. Although it sounds a little childish it is very gritty and real. It deals with government structures and how of it can fall apart over time. The interesting part is its all told from the perspective of animals. It is a very good book because of the details and description. I also think some people will like it because of the violence and betrayal in it. When I read it I was really into how it portrayed certain political officials. At some points the book can be confusing. It is after all a 11th reading level. But it isn’t very long. I think it should be read in school so it’s easier to understand with the help of peers or a teacher. A great read for any one any age.

  26. Andrew:

I think the book called “You Don’t Know Me” by David Klass would be a good book for ninth graders to read next year because; it is a Fictional type of book that you don’t want to stop reading at all. A teenage boy creates alternative realities in his mind as he tries to deal with his mother’s abusive boyfriend, a crush on a shallow classmate, and other problems. This book is a kind of book with a lot of suspense and drama but it is a funny book as well. Many teens will enjoy this book. Hopefully they get the opportunity to do so.

  27. DaYaHnA:

The book that I would recommend to ninth graders to read is Speak. I would recommend this book to the ninth graders because some of them may be able to relate to it. This book is about a teenage girl who is in her 1st year of high school and can’t fit in quite well. She goes through the whole school year being an outcast until she finally speaks like the others. It’s a mystery because everyone always thought she was just a weird person, but really held in a deep dark secret. Ninth graders could compare their 1st day to the girl in the book. Was they an outcast, or did they fit in but recognized another outcast?

  28. Roman:

The book that I recommend for the ninth grade reading list is Speak. This book shows you the life of a girl that is basically hated by her peers. It shows that not everyone has a good life and that things do happen. Not everyone has a lot of friends and is popular. But the book shows that the past shouldn’t be in your present. If something horrible has happened before in your life you cant let it interfere with your daily life. You have to move on and hope for something better. This might help students that are depressed and lonely and show them that the future can be a lot less dark than it is now. This is why I would recommend this book for the future reading list.

  29. caroline.:

The book that i recommend for our reading is called “gone with the wind” by: Mitchel Margraet. I have never read this book and i hear that is it is awesome. The book is fiction, and it is 1024 pages long. The publisher is by Warner books. I think that this would be a wonderful book to read because of the way that it was writen and the book is oldtime. I think that the book will teach me and educate me further on my current education on the civil wars. I think that the book will be a great experience to read for me and my class mates. Other students will enjoy the way the book is writen and i beleive that this is a intresting looking book.

  30. jaime g.:

The book that I would recommend for 9th graders next year would be speak. I am recommending this book because it contains many conflicts that students just coming into high school next year will be able to relate to. I believe that students will need some type of “guide to high school” to help them get by more easily. There are also a lot of humorous, and suspense building moments in this book.

  31. Matt A.:

A book I recommend for you the ninth graders is “Kiss the Girls” by James Patterson. It is a mystery book about 2 murderers who kill young women. It is around 450 pages, give or take a little. I personally liked the book, but It is kind of a sequal, and you might have to read “Along came a Spider”. Although, it is relativly easy to infer the information and you most likely will not have to read any other books.

  32. stephii:

A book I would recommend to a future 9th grader is the book Speak. I would recommend this book because the person reading this book might want to see another person going through high school through the person’s eyes who wrote they story or they want to see what might happen to a person when they go through high school. Also, the book Speak there is alot of conflicts for a lot of student to relate to.

  33. adam:

I strongly reccomend the book speak for ninth grade students. This is a very good book. It is about a girl who is pretty much a loser in school. There are not to many people who actually hang out with her. It shows that not everyone in school gets along very good. Some of my other friends also read the book and liked it a lot. They gave up the ending for me before I was even done the book. I am sure that the book will relate to a lot of the students as they are coming from the eighth grade. They will not have much friends at first but they just gotta put themselves out there.

  34. Emily:

A book that i would recommend for the 9th graders next year would be “speak” becasue it is a very intetresting novel; and most teens can relate to it. I think mostly everyone that read the book was very interested; and just wanted to continue reading. it wowuld be great to have speak for a required reading for the 9th graders next year, and it would be a book that most students would actually enjoy; instead of having a boring book that no one would be able to get into, or like.

  35. Ahron F.:

The book that I would recommend is about a man who tells a story about his brother. His brother is named Herkimer Gudson who goes through conflics throughout his life. Herk, as they call him, has been piecered literally and figuratively. He first gets piecered with a sewing needle in his right hand and then when he plays with his brother he gets hit in the head with a iron.

  36. Tyra:

The book that I recommend for ninth graders is “Nineteen minutes” by Jodi Picoult. I recommend this book because it is very interesting, it has a little mystery, and people can relate to it. When I was reading this book,I could not put it down. This book has many conflicts that happen in daily life that was similar to the conflicts in the book “Speak”. The only difference between the two books is that in this book, a boy is getting bullied and he takes action in a really violent way. Some of the actions that happen in this book are similar to what happened at Virginia Tech.

  37. Stephanie:

A book that I would recomend next year is “Speak”. I think it is a great book for teenagers that are going into high school to read. It talks about what a young girl goes through the summer before high school starts. At a party, she called the cops and now everyone, including her best friends hate her. I really liked this book and I would recommened it to anyone.

  38. Haley:

The book I recommend is Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. I would recommend this book,
because it relates to a lot of conflicts teenagers go through.
Also, I don’t usually like reading, but this book kept my interest.

  39. Chelsea:

For next years freshman reading list I recommended that the English teachers require students to read To Kill A Mockingbird. In the middle of my ninth grade year I decided to read this book, and I am so glad I did. The book was about a lawyer and his family who live in a small town in Alabama. One day the lawyer, Atticus Finch, was asked to defend a black man who was accused of raping a young white girl. The story has a slow, and sometimes confusing start but, as you continue to read you will see that all of the what seems like “minor details” help to unfold the verdict of the court.

  40. amber:

The book that I would recommend next year is looking for Alaska. The reason that I would recommend it is because its a terrific book about teens. It does not built teens up to make it seem like there is a way that every teen must be or show that they have a perfect life but it is like a true teen life. The characters go through many optical that sever teens go through and in a way could teach different teens in different ways. This is why I would recommend looking for Alaska by john green.

  41. Tiffany:

I think a good book for ninth graders to read is Speak. A lot of people can relate to this book because its about a girl just starting her freshmen year and how she doesn’t really fit in. She is basically an outcast and doesn’t talk that much. Towards the end though she started opening up. She went through some difficult times in her freshman year and didn’t really have anyone to talk to so it was pretty difficult for her. Most people just thought she was some weird girl who was never socialable or anything but really she was just a normal freshman going through difficult times. For example when she got raped, she couldn’t tell anyone because she was scared of what the outcome might be.

  42. Kara.:

I would choose the book Speak to recommend to the 9th graders reading list next year. People can relate to this book and learn things from it. For example the 9th graders can relate to Melinda because she is experiencing high school for the first time too. It shows how miserable and unhappy a person is if they are excluded from other people. The book keeps the interest of the reader and makes them want to know what happens next. I would also recommend this book because it is easy to understand and it all flows together.

  43. Erica:

I think an excellent book for next year would be The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. I pick this book not only because it is an entertaining book for some one in high school but also it deals with real life dilemmas. The fact that the main character in the book was stabbed in the back by his friend, and jailed for a crime he did not commit, can translate into high school problems. Plus all the twists in the book, as in the highs and the lows, really speak to the reader about the main characters life in a sense that you are no connected to him, even as he is losing his humanity in jail, and striking a bargain with smugglers on a beach. The book is eventful tail of a changing life, and over coming obstacles in life’s way, such as the main character had to do to get back home to the woman he loved. It’s a romance, a drama, a thriller and a life changer all rolled into one.

  44. ashley:

A good book that I think ninth graders should read is, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, this would be a great book for teens to read because it shows you that speaking up is important. This book is a ficton story but it shows how teens go through ups and downs in thier life, it also shows you how to stay true to yourself, even if your not popular.

  45. Rebecca:

The book I would recommend for next year’s 9th graders would be the classic novel, “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier. I think this would be a great book because it is very interesting and keeps you wondering all throughout the book. Teens seems to get bored and disinterested very easily, me in particular, but this book kept me so interested I could not believe it! The author really phrases sentences and uses specific words to make the reader more and more curious about the plot, then the climax and the ending were so detailed and intense! The book is just amazing!

  46. Julia:

The book I would recommend is Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. I would recommend speak for the Freshman next year because, its about teens fitting in at highschool. Also because most teens can relate to it. The book explains how Melinda (the main character in the book) gets treated in her highschool by other students, her parents, and her teachers.

  47. Samantha:

I reccommend Looking for alaska because it is a nineth grade book and because when i read it i could really relate. In the book a kid goes to college and meets new people. He struggles a little but he can always retrace his steps. It was a real life relater. I loved this book and have recommended it to My best friend. When you read this you will never want to stop. And when it is over you will wish there was more. Thanks for reading my reccomendation

  48. justin:

i recommend the book speak because it is about high school and im in high school and i can relate to it. it is a very good book because there is cliquse in high school and people go each other way and hangout and only talk to people that relate to them or seems like there something about your friends that something you have to. a lot of people make friends and dont be friends and a lot of people start trouble and theres a lot of partys that go on. i hope a lot of a people read this book and comment back.

  49. Alicia:

I strongly recommend the book Looking for Alaska as a required book for ninth graders. I chose this book because I feel it gives a good insight on how high school can be. It tells about peer pressure in teens. Alaska is the girl who Miles likes when he goes to a new high school. He makes friends but they do stuff that he has never done before. He starts to do those things as well so he can fit in. So since Looking for Alaska gives insight about peer pressure and gives an inside look at high school life I feel it is a good book for ninth graders to read.

  50. jessica:

A book that i would recommend for the incoming ninth graders to read is “THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN”. i read this book for my third marking period book project. This book was on the book list that was created by Mr. Powell and Mrs.oharra and despite what I thought was an amazingly good book. This book had many different situations all going on at one time. This book also had a great story line. Also you can learn from this book. I really enjoyed this book when I read it and I feel as though a majority of the new freshmen would also enjoy reading this wonderful story.

  51. Monique:

I recommend the book Speak. Speak was really easy to relate to and I liked reading it while I was in ninth grade because the main character was in ninth grade as well. The book was about a teenager who went through a lot in her first year of high school and a lot of us teenagers go through similar things in our first year of high school. I do not really care for reading and I get bored of it very easily and a lot of teenagers are like that, but the book Speak kept me interested and I wanted to read more and more. I think ninth graders would really enjoyed reading Speak.

  52. Danielle:

A great book for ninth graders to read would be Speak. I personally loved this book and thought that it captured perfectly how teenagers behave. In high school there are cliques and in this book it showed many of them and how they interacted with one another. This book would teach students to be more kind to others because through out the book it shows how this one girl feels while she has no friends and is bullied in school. I know that this book has taught me to be kinder to others, and hopefully it will teach the new ninth graders the same lesson.

  53. Craig:

For 9th grade, a book I would recommend would be “Speak”.
It was a good story that involved high school, which all teenagers can relate to so it was interesting. It was mainly about a girl who has a bad experience and it follows her through high school as she tries to fit in. Anyway, she is kind of an outcast because of something that happened and now she deals with high school and all the problems that come with it.
While there, she tries to find herself and what she likes and how to speak and say what she wants to tell her friends and family. It `s an inspiring story that may help out some 9th grader.

I think that a good book that the ninth graders could read for next year would be The Secret Life Of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd because its about this girl who lives in this house with bees in the walls. she is having problems with her dad so she just sits in her room dreaming of her mother who died when she was really young. its deals with some pretty hard core issues of family life and its scary at times and makes you cry at times. it’s a great book and i think that everyone should have to read it.

I think a good Book for next years New 9th graders would have to be The watermen it is based only about twenty or thirty years ago. The story happens on the chesapeke bay. A young guy and his freinds crabbing bussiness has hit a dead after a Nor’easter washed away all the crabs. Then they move to Virgina to start a new bussiness. The people down their are rude trying to get them to leave saying there ain’t enough crab’s to go round. What they did not expect was to get caught in the middle of a smuggling drug ring. The story includes suspense, violence, death, drugs, and shooting. I highly recomend this book for any 9th grade person that likes the outdoors.

  56. Keni:

The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult is book that I recommend for the freshman next year. Over the summer before coming here I read My Sister’s Keeper, which I found very interesting. I notice a book one day at the store by the same author so I picked it up. Picoult is her books makes situation believable. Since in both of these books that I read was based on girls in high school, it was a lot easier to relate to how they were feeling as the events of the story unfolded. Once you read one of Jodi Picoult books, you would want to read all of them.

I recommend the book speak for 9th graders. The reason that I recommend this book is because the book relates to teens life and they can actually relate to what is going on the book. The book Speak deals with so many issues that happen when entering high school. The book lets teens know that you should not care what people think or say about you, and if they are going to judge you before they even know you, then you probably do not want to even be friends with them in the first place. The book also sends the message that, if rumors are started about you, that you should not even listen to them because most of the time what people are saying is not true. Finally, it says to be who you are and not to try and be something that you are not. It is better to be liked for who you then the fake person that you are trying to be.

  58. Kim:

The book I would recommend for next years ninth graders is Speak. I would recommend this book because some freshman may be able to relate to the story line. Also, because the book is about a freshman, and I think it would be great to read about someone who is the same age as me and went through what happened in the story. There are also many cliques in the book Speak and I think that reading a book that has cliques in it, will show how different people think about the many different types of cliques in high school. Finally, Melinda (the main character in the book) is telling and showing her life in ninth grade without any friends, and I think that will make the incoming freshman re-think how they treat people who don`t have any friends.

  59. Rick James (mark):

A book that I would recommend for ninth graders is the book Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book is about a girl named Melinda Sordino who is hated by the entire school because she called the police at her ex-best friend Rachel’s end of summer party. during the book she has a battle in her mind whether she should tell her parents and Rachel that Melinda called the police because a boy named Andy Evans raped her at the party. This book will be great for the freshmen because the book describes the life teenagers.

  60. Calik R:

The book I would recommend for next year ninth graders is Looking For Alaska. I would recommend this book because it shows different conflicts and how to overcome them. Also the book shows that nobody’s life is perfect and all teenagers go through the same things in life. The new ninth graders could relate to the book because it’s set in a school setting. The characters go through many optical situations that teens go through and in a way could teach different teens in different ways. In conclusion Looking For Alaska would be a good book for new ninth graders

  61. Melissa S.:

I really can’t think of a recommendation because we all have different tastes. Someone may not like the same types of books that I do. I would prefer something that has a bit of a twist to it. I love books that keep you guessing. Something that you normally wouldn’t read, but not something so boring that the students are falling asleep. Maybe we could read something like a comedy or a drama. Sorry I’m not much help.

  62. Sarah:

The book that I would recommend for all incoming freshmen is To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee. I had to read this book in the beginning of my 9th grade year for a book project. Once I started reading the book I could not put it down. In the beginning, the book starts out a little slow and boring but then once you read a little bit into the book it gets very interesting. This book is about racism and two families who argue about it. Also in this book there are two kids named Jem and scout and they try to get there neighbor to come out of the house because he hasn’t been out for years and years and he is mean and grouch and will come after you if you go on his property. To any 9th graders who read this book it will teach you not to judge people on how they look or what they believe. This was a great book so I recommend it to anyone.

  63. Tiff-Tiff:

One book that I would recommend for the ninth grade reading level is Hip Hop High School. It is about a teenage girl in tenth grade who is trying to focus on studying for SAT’s and at the same time she trying to keep up with the “hip hop life” at school. At her school she says if you act too proper you will get beat up. The whole school year she keeps her SAT life on a down low basis and the only one who knows is her friend Devon who is the smartest boy in school. I recommend this book because everyone student in high school can relate to it and it is an excellent book to read.

  64. Liz:

This year in English class we had to read a few books, although they were ok, I would much rather read a book with a little mystery or a book about teenagers dealing with troubles. A book that I enjoyed was “A time for dancing”, written David Wills Hurwin, based on two teenagers who are girls and the one girl ends up with cancer. It’s an interesting book, although it is sad it has a lot of meaning and real life lessons. I would defiantly recommend this book for ninth grade student next year.

  65. Abemastercool:

A book that I would recommend to 9th graders is Kite Runner. I think this book is good for ninth graders because it is a very good book. This book is a long book so you really can’t complain about it being too short either. After reading this book, I got a small idea of what life in the Middle East can be like.

  66. Jordan:

A book that I recommend next year for future ninth graders at St. Georges is The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. This book is very good. I have seen the movie twice and read the book once. It’s not just good, but it gets students to think about what they have read and it teaches students a great life lesson. It teaches you that your life is not usless no matter what your job is. Also this book is used in a lot of english classes from grade seven through high school so it would be appropriate for students.

  67. kevin:

A book that I recommend for the 9th grade reading list is looking for Alaska by John Green. I pick this book because I believe it is a good story that is fun to read. I myself haven’t read it all the way yet but so far I am enjoying it. It shows different conflicts that teenagers have as they go through and how they can be solved. It also shows that teenagers go through tuff times and that some things are hard to overcome but you need to do it or else you will fear it the rest of your life. The book looking for Alaska would be a great book for the new 9th graders to read.

  68. Emily R:

There are many books that I have read and would like to submitt but I feel that they are not on a ninth grade reading level. Many books that I enjoy are murder mysteries, so I don’t know how some students will react to them. But another book that I would reccomend to the nineth grade reading list is the five people you meet in heaven. I read this book this year I thought that this book was pretty entertaining and very interesting. The book is about a man named eddie who does not think that his life is worth anything and that he was a waste of time. When eddie dies trying to save a little girls life he is sent to heaven where he meets five people who affected his life in some way. He latter realizes that he was important and his life was worth living. This is a great book and I reccomend it to the nineth grade reading list.

  69. JeReMe:

I think a good book to read is Speak by Laurie Holse Anderson. I think this is a good book for a freshman to read because it is easy to relate to because we are freshman. During this story Melinda starts highschool, and she is left out. She does not know who to hang out with, who to talk to, or who to sit with at lunch. . She does not talk to her old friends from last year. This book relates to some people because, Melinda was going through some rough times and so did some people at our new school.

  70. Tasha* Tenea:

The book I would recommend the ninth graders to read is the “THE SKIN IM IN”. I recommend this book because everyone can relate to it. The girl in the book was always getting talked about because how she look. But she liked this boy and the boy liked her back but wouldn’t talk to her because if he did his friends would clown him. But anyway she end up changing her look to fit in. She found out that, that wasn’t her she changed her look back to what it was and stayed like that and didn’t care what people thought of her. Then she started to gain respect because she didn’t let people get to her. This is good because everyone in high school wants to fit in and want to look like something they not. Hopefully this book will help the ninth graders know if they be their self then they will find some friends or even fit in to a group just like them.

  71. brandon:

The book that I recommend for the new and improved ninth grade reading list is the five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom. I recommend the book for students because it shows what life is all about and why you are here and more. I liked the book and I learned some things from that I needed. For example, I thought there was no point in any thing and I learned everything happens for a reason. I think other teens will agree and also like the book as much as I did. The book was about a guy named Eddie and he ends up dying and he meets five people that were in his life and they tell him why life was important and what he did.

  72. lil man marcus:

I think a book that would be good for the students next year is SPEAK. I think so is because alot of students can relate to that coming out of middlr school. Another reason that i would reccomend this book would be that in this book the way thst the kids treat eachother is
almost exactly the way that some kids get treated and its not a good feeling. So the kids that do have this problem can relate to this book and maybe they can get some tips on how they can protect themselves. Or to help them selves make new friends instead of
making more and more enemys. Also it gives you tips on how to surive 9th grade and how to make good friends not bad ones. And how to be a good student towards the teachers.

  73. Josh P:

This year in ninth grade we had a bad list to choose from except one book which I thought was the best. It was Looking for Alaska by John Green. This was a book that would keep you wanting to read more and more because it is based around the lives of people around our age. But I would recommend Looking for Alaska or a book from the Resident Evil series because they have a lot of action and have you racing through the pages.

  74. J.Wheatizzle:

I think a good book for ninth graders to read is the book Hoops. I read it over the summer and I thought it was great, especially for people who like basketball. It involved a high school graduate who was great at ballin. He has a choice to sell himself to make alot or to follow his dream and becoming a NBA superstar. Along the way he has problems with his coach who starts out as a drunk, girls, alcohol, and much more. I think its perfect for a ninth grader.

  75. ARi3ll3:

The book that I recommend next year for the new 9th graders is Ryan White: My Own Story. I recommend this book because it is very touching. It deals with a 15-year-old boy who gets aids in the late 1970’s and how after the whole town finds out, he can’t go back to school. This is a true story written by him and Anne Marie Cunningham. This book will teach teenagers to value their life and that we should not treat people the way that we wouldn’t want to be treated because life is too short. This book was excellent!

  76. LaShay:

The book that I would recommend is “ The Outsiders”. This book keeps you wanting to read and not stop. This book talks about growing up, how they get into things such as violence, gangs, and fighting. But with this book the ninth graders can relate to these type of books. But this book has great conflicts, climax, and resolutions.

  77. marlene:

I personally recommend the book Speak to be read by the following ninth graders coming to St. George High School. This book has been rated as the ninth grade level, because it is based on a real life event. Knowing teenager I think that they would be interested in non-fiction book. The book may even relate to some of the new ninth graders coming next year and might even give some of them advice on what to do. The book Speak is also a book that will keep the new freshmen’s guessing for the ending or for the event coming up next. So this book should really be a recommendation for next year students.

  78. Courtney W:

The book that I will recommend is called “Blood Valley” by William W. Johnstone. I would recommend this book because if you like books that have to do with the west and gun violence you would like this book. I read this book and each page kept me in shock. On almost every page there was some form of fighting whether it is fist fighting, gun fighting, and trash talking the book had it all. The book had person vs. person, person vs. society, and person vs. self conflicts in it which made it really interesting. It’s a good book so read it.

  79. benjamin:

The book that I would have to recommend for ninth graders to read would have to be “Looking For Alaska”. The reason why I would recommend this book be because I read it for a class project and I thought that it was really good and really interesting and cheap me think throughout the book. The reason why I thought that it was interesting is because some of the ways that they would act kind a reminded me of a couple of my friends and I when we go and hang out and mess around but we don’t do drug like them.

  80. Morgan:

The book I would recommend for the coming freshman’s next year is Looking for Alaska. I would recommend this book because it is very inspiring and interesting.
Looking for Alaska talks about love and live. A boy named miles goes to a boarding school and meets these people who easily influences him to drink smoke and do pranks that are not good. Alaska is known for pranking and never getting caught. But when she went out one-day drunk she hit a parked police car and died. Now the colonel and miles and all the rest of Alaska’s friend are trying to figure out did she do it purposely or was it a mistake. They learned from their mistakes but in memorial of Alaska they did the biggest prank ever. This book is a very good book for the 9th graders coming next year!

  81. veronica:

The book I would recommend would be “Twilight” by “Stephenie Meyer” because it’s a great book about a vampire who falls in love with a who isn’t a vampire. My firend recommended it to me and I thought it was going to be boring but it was great.

  82. Elisha:

I think 2 good books for the ninth grade are ‘the catch in the rye’ and ‘THeir eyes were watching god’

  83. Sue:

everyone is recommending Speak for 9th graders….will guys like this book as well???

  84. Mr. Powell:

    Thanks for your comments, Sue.
Believe it or not, boys do enjoy this story. The secret is getting them to relate to the feeling of being an outsider. I also try to get boys to identify with their own sisters or cousins. We talk about several issues mentioned in the story.
