The Courage That My Mother Had and Funeral Responses

The Courage That My Mother Had by Edna St. Vincent Millay and The Funeral by Gordon Parks both describe characteristics that the poets admired in their parents.  What do you feel is the most admirable trait a person can possess?  Why?

What Period 4 learned The week of 9/10/07

On Monday we made a book called Poetic Devices. we defined the following words in this book: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. On Tuesday we took our understanding of Simile and Metaphor, and we did RFA #3. On Wednesday we did a word wall which is writing a sentence using the words that we defined in our Poetic Devices booklet, and did RFA #4. Thursdaywe did RFA#5 and we picked groups for our Digital Storytelling Projects. In our Groups we brainstormed ideas for the poem and themes for the pictures.Friday we did RFA#6 and brainstormed more ideas for the Digital Storytelling projects.

Dear Abby Letter

As a group, create a letter to Dear Abby that reflects a problem arising from a conflict either in the workplace (either employee or employer) or in college.  As individuals, read and respond to one letter from a group other than your group’s entry.  Write your name, screen name, time, and date of your response on a piece of paper and hand in to Mrs. O’Hara as soon as you write your response.

Response to “Legal Alien”

In her poem, Pat Mora discusses what it feels like to her to be Mexican-American.  Do you believe that our society prejudges immigrants?  Do we make certain assumptions about people from other countries?  Do we treat immigrants from one country different than we treat immigrants from another country?  Are there some immigrants that are more likely to be prejudged than others?

Response to “The Road Not Taken”

In his poem, Robert Frost talks about choosing a “road less traveled by.”  What problems might arise from making this choice in life?  Are there benefits to making this choice?

The Lesson of the Moth Response

We recently read a poem “The Lesson of the Moth” that discusses how one should live one’s life.  What is your reaction to the poem?  Should one be a moth, a cockroach, or some combination of the two?

UPDATE: John Batteiger, a news editor for the San Francisco Chronicle, created and edits the DonMarquis.com web site where readers can find a copy of “The Lesson of the Moth.”  -  APowell

Period 3

This week in class we had learned about our project and what to do with the project, which is to take pictures and make a movie. We have also learned about several new words which are simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopeia, alliteration, and hyperbole. That is what period 3 did this week.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover

When I first came to St. Georges I thought  it was extremely boring and that this is not where I would be for the next 4 years of my life. But now I’m haivng so much fun, making new friends and getting closer to old old ones. This school has so much to offer and I love this school. English is a challenge it would be so boring if everything in the class was easy then it would be boring and I wouldn’t grow as a student.

Blogging Etiquette

Hello class of 2011,

Welcome to our blog. We will be using this blog to converse among ourselves and with others outside our classrooms about our readings, projects and other assignments.

Rules of the road

Here are some thoughts to guide our discussions:

1) To post an article or a comment please include your first name and class
period.  DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME!   Only include your last
initial IF someone else in your period has the same first name.

2) E-mail addresses are required for comments, but we are the only ones who will ever see it!

3) Watch your language!  Ok, this is an obvious one, eh?  But in
all seriousness, be mindful of your word choice… which means that using
symbols is also off-limits (No AIM speak)!  This is a professional tool
for collaboration, treat it as such.

4)Please make comments!  Feel free to disagree
with your peers!  However, make sure that your tone is respectful.

  • BAD:  Jane made a really stupid point.  I think that blah, blah, blah…
  • GOOD:  I disagree with Jane’s point about _________ because blah, blah, blah.

5)  Any questions, let us know!
